March Rotary Students of the Month

At the March 6 Pamlico County Schools Board of Education meeting, we had the honor of celebrating several students from Pamlico County Middle School and Pamlico County High School.

Winter Williams, Laila Rich, Ayden Gomez, and Abby Harwick were recognized as the March Rotary Students of the Month!

Winter Williams, who was unable to attend, is in 7th grade. Principal Rebecca Lansche said, "Winter has a kind and gentle spirit. She always does what is asked of her with a positive attitude and a smile. She demonstrates top-notch work ethic in all of her classes and she is helpful to her teachers. She is what an exemplary student looks like at PCMS!"

Ayden Gomez is an 8th grader at PCMS. Ms. Lansche said, "Ayden is new to Pamlico County Schools but he very quickly immersed himself in Hurricane culture. He is a well-rounded student in and outside the classroom. His teachers describe him as an advocate for his own learning. he always brings an interesting perspective to class discussions, often one that is unique to that of his peers. Speaking of peers, he is a friend to all and models the kindness and respect that exemplifies a Hurricane." Recently, Ayden finished wrestling season placing first in the conference in his weight class. Head Coach, Nate Daniels, shared, "Ayden has been such a great addition to the wrestling team this year. Ayden really pushes his teammates from a place of tough love, making everyone around him better. Even though wrestling is an individual sport, it's never just about him."

Laila Rich is in 11th grade and at Pamlico County High School. Mrs. Holton said, "Laila is fairly new to Pamlico, but has quickly become an integral piece of our student body through her volunteer work and membership in SGA (student government association). Academically she also excels, both in her college and high school courses. Her work often goes above and beyond the requirements as she takes advantage of meeting with her teachers to assure every piece of work is perfect."

Abby Harwick is a senior at Pamlico County High School. Commander Michael Robinson nominated Abby with the following letter:

Abby Harwick is one of the Top 3 Navy JROTC Cadets whom I have had the pleasure to teach during my 20 years as a Navy JROTC instructor. I have known Abby in a close relationship for nearly 4 years. I have proudly watched her grow into a mature, self-assured young woman.

Abby is top notch in all that she does. She is currently ranked 2nd in her class and serves as the Commanding Officer of the Pamlico County Navy JROTC unit. She has been JROTC Unit's Academic and drone Team Commander. The Academic team has qualified for and competed in the Navy JROTC National championship for the past 3 years and competed in the all-services Joint Leadership Academic Bowl in 2022. She singlehandedly built the drone team from scratch and was able to lead the team to participate in the Area Six championship in her first year.

Abby recently completed the inaugural Chief of Naval Aviation Flight Academy where she earned her private pilot's license. She was the first in her squad to solo and complete all of the licensing requirements. She was only one of 20 (out of nearly 300( applicants to be accepted to this prestigious program. Also, through her active leadership, the MJROTC Unit has been selected as a Distinguished Unit for the past 3 years and is on track to repeat this year. The Pamlico County High School NJROTC Unit enjoys the highest reputation within the greater Navy JROTC community.

Abby always sets the proper example in her participation in various community service-related activities within the NJROTC Unit. Whether helping with eh Adopt -a - Highway, serving tables at the cancer survivor weekend at a local camp, directing traffic at multiple community events, or planning and executing school-wide events, Abby always leads the way.

Abby is calm, yet enthusiastic about all that she pursues. It is a pleasure to give my strongest recommendation for Abby. She is an exceptional scholar, leader, and team player. I truly believe that Abby Harwick will excel in whatever career she chooses."

We are so proud of these wonderful students that truly exemplify the Pamlico Spirit!
