During the June meeting of the Pamlico County Board of Education, Pamlico County Middle School (PCMS) student, Emily Sawyer, and Pamlico County High School (PCHS) student, Kenan Lynch, were recognized as the Oriental Rotary Students of the Month for their school. Each month, this recognition is bestowed upon students who exhibit scholastic achievement, leadership, honesty, community service, teamwork, and empathy, among other notable characteristics.
Emily Sawyer, a 6th grader at Pamlico County Middle School, was nominated for Rotary Student of the Month based on her strong work ethic, intrinsic motivation, and respectful attentive nature. She is always willing to lend a hand to others, works hard, and adds a lot to class discussions. Emily has a calming personality and is respected and well-liked by teachers and peers alike. She is a positive asset to the Pamlico County School System.
PCHS principal, Chris Meadows said this about Kenan Lynch, "Kenan is an exceptional young man that impresses as soon as you meet him. He is always respectful, polite, well-spoken, and has a calm demeanor. When speaking about some of his greatest accomplishments, he displays humility that is rare, especially at his age. Nevertheless, I was able to pull out some of the things he is most proud of and I must say, I am blown away about what he has done and what he will be doing soon. He has been a cadet in the PCHS NJROTC and last summer participated in a Navy Leadership Academy in Charleston, SC. He was a valuable member of the PCHS Varsity Cross County and Track teams for 3 years. Academically, he has excelled taking honors classes all four years and joining FBLA as a sophomore. His leadership is evident by the before mentioned honors and participation, but I am in awe of what lies ahead for Kenan. He will be a Rescue Swimmer in the
United States Navy and leaves on July 12th for boot camp. I am so very proud of this decision and fighting for our country is fitting for a young man of this caliber. I look forward to seeing all the great things that he will do in life and I love this young man with all of my heart."
Students are selected for the award based on the Rotary Four-Way Test, which has been used around the world since 1943. It states, “Of the things we think, say or do: 1) Is it the TRUTH?, 2) Is it FAIR to all concerned?, 3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?, and 4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?” To further commemorate this honor, the Rotary Club will place a plaque displaying the name of each recipient of this prestigious award at each school.
