The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act ensures that all children and youth experiencing homelessness have equal access to the same free, appropriate public education as other children. Pamlico County Schools is committed to supporting students and families in temporary living situations.

Protects the educational rights of children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.
A student may qualify if they are:

Living in emergency shelters, transitional or motels due to loss of housing or economic hardship

Sharing housing with others due to economic reasons (doubled up)

Living in cars, parks, campgrounds, or public spaces not meant for regular accommodation

Living in abandoned buildings or substandard housing

Unaccompanied youth not in the custody of a parent or legal guardian

Immediate school enrollment even without records

Transportation to and from the school of origin

Access to free school meals, educational programs, and extracurricular activities

Assistance with school supplies and uniforms

Referrals to community resources and local agencies
